This post is your invitation to step into that mastery with clarity, courage, and compassion. I’ll walk you through essential strategies, share practical insights, and challenge you to see grant writing not as a chore but as a covenant — a sacred agreement between your vision and the resources that will bring it to life.
Grant Writing: A Calling, Not a Clickbait Career
(With Dr. Shawnté Elbert, EdD, MCHES — Public Health Scholar, Executive Consultant & Grant Strategist)
Grant writing is not just a skill — it is a calling. It’s the sacred art of translating vision into resources and mission into measurable impact.
If you’ve ever felt the weight of deadlines, the frustration of vague guidelines, or the sting of rejection, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too.
And when I say I've been there, this is what I mean:
My Background in Grant Strategy & Public Health Leadership
I have spent nearly two decades working in higher education, public health, wellness systems, and equity-driven organizations. My work as a consultant and strategist has:
supported multi-million-dollar grant portfolios,
led teams through complex federal, state, and foundation applications,
and helped organizations redesign their systems to achieve funding readiness.
I am:
Dr. Shawnté Elbert, EdD — scholar-practitioner in organizational leadership & health.
MCHES (Master Certified Health Education Specialist) — an advanced national credential that requires rigorous competency in assessment, planning, research, evaluation, implementation, and ethics.
Former Associate Vice President of Health & Wellness at two large universities.
Founder/CEO of Elbert Innovative Solutions, where I coach leaders, build wellness frameworks, and write/oversee high-impact grants for nonprofits, behavioral health agencies, and community-based organizations.
I don't say this to boast.I say this because grant writing is a profession, not a trend. And it’s important for you to know you’re learning from someone who does this work both deeply and ethically.
Let’s Talk About “Instagram Grant Writers”
…because we need to tell the truth.
Social media has created an entire ecosystem of people selling “quick wins,” “grant lists,” “pre-written proposals,” and “guaranteed approvals.”
And while some may have good intentions…many do not. Many have no credentials, no training, and no ethical grounding in public health, nonprofit practice, or evaluation. Some cannot define a logic model, identify funder priorities, or describe the difference between outputs and outcomes.
And I’ve watched organizations — especially Black-led nonprofits and small businesses — lose credibility, opportunities, and money because they trusted someone selling shortcuts instead of strategy.
We have to address what’s happening out there. Scroll social media right now and you’ll find people promising overnight funding, “guaranteed wins,” or “grant plug-ins” for $99. Sounds tempting — but dangerous.
🚩Here’s the truth that too few are telling you:
No one can guarantee a grant. Period. Funders don’t sell favors. They fund alignment.
Copy-paste proposals don’t work. Funders know when the language is generic. Authenticity and data matter.
Real grant work takes integrity, systems, and relationship building. Anyone promising shortcuts is skipping the part where trust and ethics live.
I’ve seen organizations lose credibility — and funding — because they chased a quick fix instead of building sustainable grant practices.
If you’re learning the craft, do it right. Study frameworks, take classes, find mentors, read funded proposals, and practice humility.
Credentials matter.
Ethical practice matters.
Alignment matters.
Strategy matters.
Grant writing is not hustling. Grant writing is stewardship.
Understanding Grant Funding Strategies: The Foundation of Success
Before you put pen to paper, you must understand the landscape. Grant funding strategies are not random acts of hope. They are deliberate, informed, and aligned with your mission and capacity.
Here’s what you need to know:
Know your funders deeply. Research their priorities, language, and past awards. Funders want to see themselves in your proposal. They want to know you understand their mission as well as your own.
Align your goals with theirs. This is not about bending your mission but about highlighting the intersections where your work advances their vision.
Build relationships. Grant writing is not transactional. It is relational. Reach out, ask questions, and engage with program officers before you apply.
Plan your timeline realistically. Grant cycles vary. Some require letters of intent months in advance. Others have rolling deadlines. Map your calendar carefully.
Demonstrate capacity. Funders invest in people and systems as much as projects. Show them you have the leadership, infrastructure, and sustainability plans to steward their investment well.
These strategies are your compass. Without them, you risk wandering in the wilderness of vague proposals and missed opportunities.

Crafting Your Proposal: The Heartbeat of Grant Funding Strategies
Now that you have your foundation, it’s time to build your proposal with intention and precision. This is where your story meets structure.
Key elements to focus on:
Executive Summary - This is your first impression. Be concise, compelling, and clear about what you want and why it matters.
Needs Statement - Paint a vivid picture of the problem or opportunity. Use data, but don’t let numbers overshadow the human story.
Goals and Objectives - Define what success looks like. Objectives should be SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Methods and Activities - Detail your plan. How will you achieve your objectives? Who will do what, and when?
Evaluation Plan - Funders want accountability. Show how you will measure progress and impact.
Budget and Justification - Be transparent and realistic. Explain how every dollar supports your goals.
Sustainability - How will your project continue after the grant ends? This is a critical question funders ask.
Remember, your proposal is a narrative and a contract. It must be authentic and aligned with your values, yet rigorous and professional.
Can I use ChatGPT to write a grant proposal?
Let’s address the elephant in the room. AI tools like ChatGPT are powerful assistants, but they are not replacements for your voice, vision, and expertise.
Here’s how to use ChatGPT wisely:
Drafting ideas and outlines. Use AI to brainstorm or organize your thoughts.
Polishing language. AI can help clarify sentences or suggest alternative phrasing.
Research support. It can provide background information or summarize complex topics.
But here’s the catch - AI lacks context, nuance, and soul. It cannot capture your unique mission or the lived experience behind your work. It cannot build relationships with funders or navigate the politics of your sector.
If you rely solely on AI-generated content, you risk submitting generic, uninspired proposals that fail to connect.
Use ChatGPT as your assistant, not your author. You bring the mission. Let technology bring efficiency, not substitution. ChatGPT becomes as a tool in your toolkit, not the craftsman. Combine its efficiency with your strategic clarity and heartfelt storytelling.

The Power of Partnership: When to Seek Professional Grant Writing Services
Sometimes, the path to success requires a guide. If you find yourself overwhelmed by the complexity of grant writing or pressed for time, consider partnering with experts.
Professional grant writing services bring:
Strategic insight - They know what funders want and how to position your proposal.
Technical expertise - They craft clear, compelling narratives and budgets.
Capacity building - They can train your team to sustain grant readiness.
Time savings - They free you to focus on mission-critical work.
If you hire help, do your due diligence. Check credentials, ask for samples, and read contracts carefully. You deserve collaboration, not exploitation.
This is not outsourcing your vision but amplifying it. A skilled grant writer becomes your advocate, translator, and coach.
Do the work with excellence. Lead with ethics. Write like lives depend on it — because they often do.
Beyond the Proposal: Cultivating a Culture of Grant Readiness
Grant writing is not a one-off event. It is a discipline embedded in your organizational culture.
To thrive:
Build a grant calendar. Track deadlines, reporting requirements, and renewal opportunities.
Develop internal systems. Create templates, data collection processes, and budget tracking tools.
Invest in training. Equip your team with skills and confidence.
Celebrate wins and learn from losses. Every proposal is a step forward.
Prioritize rest and restoration. Grant cycles can be intense. Protect your well-being to sustain your impact.
Grant readiness is a leadership practice. It requires alignment before action and culture by design. When you embed these values, you create a fertile ground where funding flows and people flourish.
